1. The Death of Google Authorship

2. 12 Tips For Greater Google+ Reach and Attention

3. 3 Recommendations for Getting Started on Google+

Does Killing Authorship Deliver a Mortal Wound to Google+
or is it..."just a flesh wound!".

Google Authorship Flesh WoundI invite you to read Mark Traphagen and Eric Enge's article: It’s Over: The Rise & Fall Of Google Authorship For Search Results

It's a well balanced overview of the history of Google Authorship, its challenges and why Google finally decided to end the grand experiment.

The flesh wound isn't on Google+ directly but on marketers and SEO pros who used Google Authorship as the "carrot" to get clients on the platform.

John Mueller, yep, the same guy who announced the removal of rich snippet images in June, read the death certificate on his Thursday post.

While there was the usual gnashing of teeth and, Google+ is dead hyperbole, John made a few things clear:
"...Search users will still see Google+ posts from friends and pages when they’re relevant to the query — both in the main results, and on the right-hand side. Today’s authorship change doesn’t impact these social features."

The value of being on Google+ and building relationships there is still very important and will  still give you an advantage.

What do we do with authorship markup we've already installed?
"... we treat it like any other markup on your pages. Leaving it is fine, it won't cause problems (and perhaps your users appreciate being able to find out more about you through your profile too)." You don't have to remove your authorship tag from your site.

If you're a business with a Google My Business Page, it's important to note that "rel=publisher" is still supported.
Google Authorship is dead, long live Google Publisher.
From Mark Traphagen:
"I think they see that their ability to know about brands and highlight them to searchers when searchers are looking for them IS of value to searchers. Furthermore, Google+ pages are the backbone of Google's new Google My Business initiative, especially for local businesses."

The grand experiment failed. The patient has expired, has passed away, is dead as a Parrot. Time to move on.

As Ryan Hanley wrote is his excellent essay: Confessions of a Recovering Google Authorship Addict

"The honest to goodness truth is that it really means nothing in terms of what you should be doing to grow your business online. You still need to create high-quality, targeted content, that solves the problems, answers the questions and fulfills the needs of the customers you want to serve."

12 Tips For Greater Google+ Reach & Attention

(via Rand Fishkin)

1. Measure your progress. - Use a tool like CircleCount to track your G+ Activity to see what works and what doesn't.

2. Be visual

3. Share to the right people.  - Customize exactly who you want to share with, Public, Circles or individuals. You can also email them. (with caution.)

4. Use Ripples to find potential amplifiers.  - People most likely to share your content.

5. Share G+ posts on other networks

6. Share at the right times.  - You can find out what those times are with CircleCount or Followwonk. (Twitter schedules align well with G+ posts.)

7. Reciprocation.  - That's how the social web works, right?

8. Join and leverage Communities

9. Employ Hashtags and Keywords

10. Format your posts. *Bold* -strikethrough- _italic_

11. Create "Direct Notification Circles"

12. Consider Google+ Comment Integration

3 Tips for Getting Started on Google+
...I wish I knew when I did.

3 things I'd do differently on Google Plus

1. Set up your home/office before inviting people in.

Fill in your About Page with as much information as you can and keep it current. Let people know who you are, what you do and what kind of content they can expect from you,
This will help them decide which circle to put you in.

Completing your Profile will also completes your hovercard (your  de facto internet business card.)

Profile elements that appear on Hovercard: h/t Jimmie Lanley

Google+ Hover Card

1 - Eye catching cover image (1080 x 608)

2 - Profile image: full frontal, smiling preferably (unless your name is Darth Vader) (270 x 270)

3 - Full real name

4 - Tagline: First 40 (approx.) characters of your Tagline. Make it keyword rich.

5 - Works at: (click current if you want it shown.) URL or business name.

6 - Education: (click current if you’re still attending)

7 - Location: For local search & letting people know your time zone.

2. Control of your circles from the start.

By knowing why you’re on Google+, you’ll have a better idea of who you want to engage with here.
When I started, I was all about getting as many people to circle me as possible.
The platform was so new, I was operating under a Facebook and Twitter mentality.

As Mia Voss advises - "Don’t be a size queen."

While numbers do count, the quality of followers matter more.
As you build relationships through engagement, your circles will increase.

Above your Home Page you have 3 circles featured. (Between ALL and MORE)
Make these circles your priority circles.
Fill them with people you want to build relationships with.
Example:

Circle #1 - Google+ Resources,

Circle #2 - Hangout Hosts

Circle #3 - Top engagers.

3. Be a person not a persona.

As with a new school or job, we like to put our best foot forward.
Sometimes the shoe on that foot is just too big so we stumble and trip along the hallways.
We attract more stares and giggles than friends.

No one will judge you on Google+ for what you don’t know about the platform.
We’re all learning.
We've all  been in your shoes

As you reach out to influencers people reaching out to you.

You can help them get to know who you are by:

Including personal passions and interests in your profile.

Sharing images of things that you find funny/interesting/odd

Adding comments to their posts and posts you share

Invite people to a personal hangout

Host a Hangout On Air about a topic you’re passionate about

What would you have done differently when you started on Google+?

Thank you very much for sharing your time with me.
If you found this helpful, please share it with your friends.

Until next week, enjoy your walk on the "Plus" side.

Google Pigeon Update

Google Plus Tips for Aug 2nd - issue 112

1. Connect with Influencers on Google+
2. Google+ Keyboard Shortcuts and URLs
3. What has the Pigeon Update Left Behind?

Opening Conversations with influencers

When you’re new to an area or platform (in the case of Google+),  the hardest part for many is to make connections. And the first step in doing that is to “break the ice”.
When you go to a networking event, you don’t insinuate yourself into a group of people who are in mid conversation.
You listen for awhile and when you have something to add, you join in.
One of the quickest ways to build strong relationships is to connect with influencers as they tend to know the most people and can sprinkle some of their “authority” dust on to you.
How to get their attention?

Google+ lists 17 different notification triggers that can help you connect with influencers in your industry.
Google+ Notifications
Depending on the individual's account settings, these notifications can take the form of an email, phone SMS, or the omnipresent red Google notification bar.

17 actions that trigger notifications:

  1. Mention them in a post
  2. Share a post with them directly
  3. Share a post and you're in a circle they subscribe to
  4. Comment on a post they created
  5. Comment on a post after they comment on it
  6. Add them to a circle
  7. Suggest new people to add to their circles
  8. Tag them in a photo
  9. Tag one of their photos
  10. Suggest a profile photo for them
  11. Comment on a photo after they comment on it
  12. Comment on a photo they are tagged in
  13. Comment on a photo they tagged
  14. Start a conversation with them
  15. Send them an invitation or update an event
  16. Remind them about events
  17. Any activity on events they created

WARNING: As more people use Google+, it becomes harder to connect with G+ veterans & influencers because they closely manage their circles and notifications.
The best method is to always to start a relationship by engaging with their content first - +1 them, comment and share. They’ll notice you and will be more apt to circle you.
Consequently, when they do receive a notification about your event or a mention of them in your post, they’re more likely to respond by thanking you, +1ing or sharing your post.
Note: If you get spammy, you will be blocked.

Google Pigeon update statue

Google Pigeon Update

If you or your clients have a Local Business, then you best mind the “Pigeon”.

The recent Google Pigeon Update is radical updating of the way local results are ranked in Google Search. It is not a penalty-based update (aimed at cleaning the SERPs from low-quality content), but a core change to the local search ranking algorithm.

What’s Changed?

1. Local listing packs disappear for a huge number of keywords
What do to - Cover the traffic losses with a PPC campaign, and in the long run — focus on getting Web search listings for those keywords.

2. Local rankings are expected to depend more on website authority
What to do - Run a thorough competition research to see how your backlinks, content and other SEO characteristics stand to those of other high ranking websites.

3. Ranking boost is seen for Yelp and other local directories.
What to do - Make sure your business is listed in the most influential local directories in your niche.

4. Local carousel remains a way to gain extra exposure.
What to do - make sure to put a nice, high-quality and attractive photo in your Google+ business profile and encourage your customers to review your business.

For complete Pigeon ramifications as well as more recommendations and best practices for local rankings improvement, see original article.

Google+ Hangouts Events and SEO

Ronnie Bincer posted the news last week that Google+ was rolling out an experiment allowing us to find YouTube Live Events or Hangouts On Air on Google search.

For example, if I created a HOA Event featuring Ronnie talking about his Hangout Mastery Community, you could do a search for "Ronnie Bincer" and  find my event. Then you'd be able you to click the "watch live event" icon and watch it live.

Watch a live event

A live event will start to show up in search up to 3 hours before it starts. Here’s how to watch a live event:
  1. Go to google.com and search for the event or the name of anyone in the event.
  2. Click Watch live event to be taken to the event page.
If the event is happening now, you can touch the play on the video to watch the event live.

If the event is happening later in the day, click Yes under "Are you going to watch?" to add the event to your Google Calendar.

There’s not a lot of information as to what ranking and authority determines your ability to show up, but optimizing the Event and YouTube video certainly can’t hurt.

And regardless if this experiment rolls out in your area, good SEO practices will help your HOA be found in regular search. (Especially personalized.)

Event and Video SEO tips:

1. Optimize the title of the Event/Video for relevant keywords.

2. Keep the title short (within 70 characters) and the most important, at the front.

3. Be sure the title reflects the content.

4. Write a detailed description and include keywords.

5. Keep the first line of your description brief as it will appear as a snippet.

6. Before your Event goes live, go to your YouTube Live Events and enter same details .

7. Add annotations and CTAs (call to actions) .

8. Use tags that are referred to in the video.

9. Add the video to a playlist on your channel. Mine is G+LunchBunch Shows.

10. Embed the video on your blog with a summary or time stamp and share on social.

Showcase App for Hangouts On Air (pdf)

(click above link for PDF)

Hangouts Showcase App

This news caused a ripple in the G+ stream on Thursday when Google rolled out this much anticipated HOA app.

I much prefer “showcase” to  “shopping” as it was called in beta as the latter brings Chiapets and Chop O Matic to mind.

“Using the new Showcase app, hosts can now direct viewers to websites, merchandise, YouTube videos, your Google+ profile and Google Play content, all in a rich display on the right-hand side of the Hangout broadcast.”

I ran a bit of a test with it and am including some screen captures here to give you an idea of what it looks like.

I'll checking it out in more detail soon, but from what I see, it behaves much like the Q/A app insomuch as it appears on the HOA Event page video placeholder along with the  Start - Trailer - Q/A icons.

Once you click on the Showcase App icon on the left menu bar, a side panel opens where you can enter a link to a website.

For this test, I included links to: my Subscriber Opt-In form, Website and G+ Community.

If you have multiple images on your site, they will scroll on the sidebar in slideshow format. You can edit which will show.

As with the QA app, this works only for hosting a SHOAE (Scheduled Hangout On Air Event).
Once you create the event:

1. Activate the Showcase icon

2. Click Start and enter the HOA,

3. Enter the links you want to appear in the Showcase panel. (You might need to activate it from the side apps menu - writing this on same day it rolled out. :-)

4. Images on site you linked to will appear in slideshow. You can edit images and text you want to appear.

5. Click on "Show item" save. Only those items you choose will be seen by viewers.
Note; on replays, all items you've shown are displayed.

6. Exit the HOA environment

7. Good idea to deactivate the Showcase app (list will be saved) This allows people to leave comments on the event page if they've hit the start arrow on the video.
If that happens, a new window opens which will hide the Event comments.
